About asking people with odd names, perhaps I should try to talk with them about their label rather than just give my usual nod of recognition to yet another Hongkie with a novel name!?
He missed out a vowel I think... Montago, Montenegro, though still unusual.

Yes, you should definitely ask them. Maybe also refer them to a good therapist if they have a really wacky one while you're at it.
